Arthur Forman, 37, pleaded guilty to drug and weapons possession, including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, in exchange for leniency at an upcoming sentencing.
Forman choked a Plainfield detective while resisting an Oct. 13, 2017 arrest, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said.
He then handed a bag containing cocaine and a gun to his sister, who threw it out a window, authorities said at the time.
A search of Forman’s bedroom turned up “numerous oxycodone pills and paraphernalia used to grind pills and package drugs for sale,” Carpenito said.
Forman already had a conviction on his record for resisting arrest and eluding in Union County a year earlier, the U.S. attorney noted.
He faces certain time at sentencing, all of which he must serve because there's no parole in the federal prison system. The maximum for the combined convictions is 30 years, under federal sentencing guidelines, although he's likely to get somewhere a third to half of that.
Carpenito credited the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Plainfield police and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office with the investigation leading to Tuesday's guilty plea.
Securing the guilty plea for the government were Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua L. Haber and Desiree Grace Latzer of Carpenito’s Criminal Division in Newark.
